Played for the first time in 2000 (but see note in following paragraph), in a 8-team format and with a "home team" among the selected/invited teams. After the second edition was first scheduled to 2001, then postponed to 2003 and eventually cancelled, the tournament returned in 2005, replacing the traditional Toyota Cup, in a new 6-team format with the participation of six continental champions. In 2007, the tournament was increased to a 7-team format, with the inclusion of one berth to the host country.
The first edition (2000) was known as FIFA Club World Championship; the second (2005) as FIFA Club World Championship Toyota Cup; the name changed to FIFA Club World Cup in 2006.
In March 2007 it was reported that FIFA accepted a request by CBF and Palmeiras to consider the 1951 Copa Rio de Janeiro as the first official Club World Championship. A definite decision was taken on December 16, 2007, by the FIFA Executive Committee: no tournaments other than those organised by FIFA in 2000 and since 2005 will be considered Club World Championships.
