An even larger 36,000 crowd including Prince Chichibu and his wife came to watch the Tournament favourite China play its old rival Philippines. Lee Wai tong was missing with a bad foot injury. Philippines nearly scored in their first attack from the kick-off, hitting the post. After 14 minutes, however, it was China who scored; Ip Pak Hwa's shot was blocked and Tai Lin Ching netted the rebound. The same player headed a second from a corner, and completed his hattrick with a wonderful volley on the half-hour. Ip Pak Hwa thought he scored a fourth only to be given offside. He did manage to score China's fifth goal in the second half before being replaced by Feng Yung Yu.

Lee Wai tong's injury was still painful so he had to miss this decisive match, which turned out to be one of the most exciting games in the history of the Far East Games.
Japan started brightly and attacked fiercely, however the Chinese felt that the referee Toraj Takeuchi was biased and claimed that every time they counter-attacked he gave them offside! Chan Kwong-yiu was also frequently fouled. After 23 minutes Teshima gave the home side the lead, and any Chinese attempts to equalize were halted, usually by the whistle happy Takeuchi. On the half-hour Ip Pak Hwa replaced Chan Ka Kum adding speed to the attack, the pressure paid off Suen Kam Shun intercepted a misplaced pass and crashed in the leveler just before half-time.
The second-half saw both teams attacking with intensity from end to end. After 57 minutes Takayama restored Japan's lead. China needed just three minutes to come back, Chan Kwong-yiu heading in a cross from his opposite winger Tso Kwai shing. They missed two glorious chances to add to their tally though the best chance fell to Teshima from the penalty spot after Wong Shui Wah handled but he missed to give the home team the lead. At the 73rd minute Honda's long clearance reached Takayama, whose centre was met by Shinojima, the linesman raised his flag for offside and the Chinese stopped, Shinojima netted and the referee pointed to the centre ignoring the flagging assistant.
Lesson play to the whistle (especially when the referee is from the opposition). The Chinese were not discouraged by the injustice and attacked with renewed vigour. A pass to the left-wing by Tai Lin Ching looked to be going out of play, but Ip Pak Hwa raced to reach it and managed to swing in a cross which Tai Lin Ching volleyed in another equalizer. Both teams strived for a winning goal without success.
The competition rules stated that extra time was necessary but the Japanese refused to carry on and the tournament had ended and the title should be shared. Chinese protests were overruled and for the first time in the Far East Games the championship was declared a tie.
