Prior to independence, two separate leagues existed, one for Europeans
and one for the locals. For 1956/57 a list
of participants for both is available. Only in 1979 the two were combined
into the Primera División.
In the sixties, two league divisions existed, usually with 8 clubs at
the top level and 7 at the second. Participants included Santa Isabel,
Atlético Ebebiyin, Real Baney and Real Rebola; the latter two, both from
settlements southeast of Santa Isabel (now Malabo), entertained a great rivalry.
