In 1992 the 22 Division One clubs resigned en masse from the Football League and formed the FA Premier League. At the end of the 1991-92 season promotion and relegation took place as normal between Div 1 and Div 2 and the 22 clubs which would have formed Div 1 of the Football League for season 1992-93 became the founder members of the new FA Premier League. Consequently the remaining divisions of the Football League were renumbered and Division Two became Division One. In 2004 the second level league was renamed Championship, with the third level becoming Division One.
