DBU (Dansk Boldspil Union - the Danish Ball games' Association) was founded on 18th May, 1889 with intentions to promote various Ball games, mainly cricket and soccer. In 1904, DBU and 6 other nations' associations founded FIFA.
In 1908 Denmark played its first international and in 1913 DBU opened its first nationwide tournament. Prior to this only a few and certainly only clubs from Copenhagen had played in more-or-less organized tournaments. From 1913 the winner of the tournament would bear the title of "Danish Champions".
In 1915 the tournament was suspended due to logistic problems caused by The Great War. Moreover, DBU was not financially strong enough to bear the economic risks of having to abandon an on-going tournament.
From 1927 and onwards the Danish Championships were decided by common divisional series.
During World War II, though, the divisional series were suspended. Instead clubs were divided geographically in 3 series, the Champions found through a cup-system.
In 1995, for the first time in Denmark, the Championships had a sponsor. The tournament was called "Coca-Cola Superligaen". At the same time the rule of awarding three points for a game won was introduced.
In the current season, the sponsor has changed. The new name of the league is "Faxe Kondi Ligaen".

As goals did not count in any way, the DBU wanted to decide
the Championships by playing re-matches between the 3 teams
above. But, B 93 and Frem, refused to play, and B 1903 had
no intentions to win the Championships without playing, so
DBU decided to cancel the Danish Championships of 1928!
To avoid this situation happening again, DBU applied new
rules. If two team had equal points, each team was placed by
a "goal quotient", i.e. goals-for divided by goals-against.
The team with the highest quotient is ranked highest.
