* El Salvador and Guatemala were due to playoff on 21-12-43 for the championship, but the playoff
  never took place.

Going into the final round of matches, El Salvador needed only a draw against Costa Rica to become
champions whereas Guatemala needed to win its own match vs Nicaragua and hope that Costa Rica
could upset the hosts, in order to force a playoff. Guatemala won 5-1 and then Costa Rica won 4-2:
both winning teams celebrated together on the pitch, enraging the already angry crowd and leading
to violent protests within the stadium and outside the teams' hotel afterwards. In this atmosphere,
the Guatemalan team feared for its safety should it take part in the playoff match. Team manager
Capitán Gereda cabled home to explain the situation and ask his government (under President Ubico)
for guidance. He was instructed not to play, and to return home immediately.

At this point the precise version of events differs according to the perspective of each country.
According to Guatemalan and Costa Rican sources, the organizing committee declared the championship
null and void, and the trophy itself was given to the Nicaraguan delegation for safekeeping.
However, Salvadorean sources say that Guatemala forfeited the playoff match, and therefore El Salvador
was awarded the championship on goal average (or goal difference).

Other sources indicate that the championship was shared.
