The first clubs formed in Catalonia were Palamós CF (1898), Català SC (1899), FC Barcelona (1899), Hispània AC (1900) and Soc. Española F (currently RCD Espanyol,1900). It was the first official tournament played in Spain. From 1903-04 a championship organized by the Football Associació de Catalunya was played. It had many troubles in the first years, but was a real professional league from 1917-18. The championship was disbanded in 1940, because of the increasing importance of the Spanish Liga.
