    CONCACAF Champions' Cup 2002

Teams left in the abandoned Champions' Cup 2001 were invited as well as Giants Cup 2001 finalists América and DC United (as teams from that tournament were promised a shot at the World Championships) and Comunicaciones, Tauro and Alajuelense (presumably to get 16 participants; elected as the top Central American non-qualifiers for the Champions' Cup 2001 finals) and finally the USA 2001 champions (San Jose Earthquakes) and the Mexican Invierno 2001 champions (Pachuca).

Originally, 4 groups of 4 teams each, to be drawn in December or January, were planned, but at the end of November, the Football Confederation changed plans once again and decided to play the tournament in a two-legs knock-out format, without a group stage.

Because of this, the tournament's name was changed from Champions' League back to Champions' Cup.

The two finalists are supposed to qualify for to the 2003 World Club Championship.
