CAF 5-Year Ranking

Starting from the 2004 season, CAF will organise only two club tournaments, an extended Champions League and the so-called Confederations Cup, a merger of the former Cup Winners' Cup with the CAF Cup.

Twelve countries will be allowed to enter 2 teams in both competitions, effectively increasing their number of participants from 3 to 4 in all competitions together (all other countries obviously lose one participant).

These twelve countries were selected according to a ranking described by CAF as follows:

The classification was made according to the performance of the countries in the past 5 years in clubs competitions:

For the Cup Winners Cup and CAF Cup, 4 points were given to the champion, 3 for the runner-up, 2 for the semi-finals and 1 point for a place in the quarter finals.

For the Champions League 5 points were given to the champion, 4 for the runner-up, 3 for clubs ranked 2nd in each group, 2 points for clubs ranked 3rd and 1 point for the last of the group.

According to this system the countries selected are: Tunisia with 36 points, Egypt 31, I. Coast 27, Morocco 24, S. Africa 17, Algeria 17, Cameroon 14, Ghana 12, Angola 12, Nigeria 10, RD Congo 8 and Senegal 6.

While the top-12 countries are indeed correct, it would seem that CAF made some computing mistakes. Below follows the 1998-2002 ranking according to our computations.

In a letter sent by CAF to its member federations on July 22, 2004, it is stated that the admission to the various cups for the 2005 season will be done according to the same 1998-2002 ranking. It is unknown why CAF did not calculate a 1999-2003 ranking (following UEFA's practice of updating its rankings each season), as there would seem to have been enough time to do this, but for curiosity, it looks as follows (with a tie for 12th place between Senegal and Zambia).

year 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 1999-2003 aggregate
