CONCACAF Championship, Gold Cup 1991 - Full Details

On August 18, 1990, at the congress held in Jamaica, CONCACAF approved the establishment of a new biannual competition
of nations to replace the previous so-called “Nations Cup” which was held every four years from 1973 to 1989 and whose
format had double value, since in addition to crowning the champion of the area it also served as a qualifier for the
FIFA World Cup.

On October 11, 1990, the invitation was extended for Mexico to host the first edition of what was initially called the
"CONCACAF Nations Soccer Cup", but since there was no interest on the part of the Mexican FA to organize the inaugural
edition, on January 27, 1991 in Guatemala, the president of CONCACAF, Jack Warner, made the official announcement of the
launch of the new tournament to be held in the USA in the summer of that year.

Additionally, regional qualifying tournaments also began to be played between the Caribbean nations and those of Central
America, respectively.

A few months later, in May, on the eve of the I Nations Tournament of the newly formed UNCAF (Unión Centroamericana de Futbol),
CONCACAF announced the name of the new competition: Gold Cup.

Finally, on April 10, CONCACAF announced that it would make an official request to CONMEBOL for the champion and runner-up
to be the teams qualified for the Copa América in its 1993 edition.

PARTICIPANT TEAMS:

Caribbean: Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago (winners and runners-up of the Shell Caribbean Cup 1991, respectively).

Central America: Costa Rica, Honduras and Guatemala (winners, runners-up and third place of Torneo de Naciones UNCAF 1991).

North America: Canada, Mexico and USA (host).

NB: Originally and according to what was initially announced, the United States and Honduras, as champion and runner-up
of the Gold Cup, were qualified for the 1993 edition of CONMEBOL Copa América; However, on July 19, 1991, after a
joint meeting between CONMEBOL and CONCACAF authorities held in Santiago, Chile, it was officially announced that
the United States (1991 Gold Cup champion) and Mexico (guest) would be the two representatives of CONCACAF in the
    South American tournament.

The decision to exclude Honduras from the continent's top national team tournament sparked bitter protests in the
Central American country; However, CONMEBOL leaders argued that Mexico offered better sporting and economic conditions
    to be considered.
