Singapore qualified as hosts, Kuwait as holders

The original draw, announced on 10th April 1984, was as follows:

Group 1, in Indonesia, Aug 7-18   
  Bangladesh, Burma, Indonesia, Iran, Philippines, Syria, Thailand.
Group 2, in Saudi Arabia, Oct 20-31 
  Lebanon, Malaysia, Nepal, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, UAE
Group 3, in India, Oct              
  Bahrain, India, Japan, Macao, Pakistan, South Korea, North Yemen
Group 4, (venue and date undecided) 
  Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, South Yemen

Burma withdrew from Group 1, Lebanon withdrew from Group 2, 
Bahrain, Japan and Macao withdrew from Group 3, Brunei, Iraq
and South Yemen withdrew from Group 4, Malaysia were moved 
from Group 2 to Group 3, and Afghanistan were entered late into 
Group 4.
