China XI tour of Australia, 1927

The Chinese team which undertook a tour of Australia in 1927 was not a formal representative national team of China and was not selected by any particular governing body, but was instead an independent selection sponsored by the tour's promoters who were Shanghai businessmen. However, it was a strong selection comprising many of the best players in Hong Kong and Shanghai, captained by China's star footballer Lee Wai-Tong. Most of the players had played some form of international football previously (either representing China at the Far Eastern Games or representing Hong Kong or Shanghai in Interport matches). Some sources labelled the Chinese team as a "combined universities team", but it was not a restricted team; many of the best Chinese footballers were indeed university students, but the selection was not based on this criterion. In a sense, this touring team was more representative of China as a whole than the team which formally represented China at the Far Eastern Games in August 1927; the latter was selected from Hong Kong clubs only, a privilege earned when "Southern China" (Hong Kong) had defeated "Eastern China" (Shanghai) in the Chinese Interport match in February 1927.

The tour manager was Prof. Leslie Kwong Kwang-Lim, an Australian-born Chinese university professor based in Shanghai with links to the Loh Hwa Athletic Club; a detailed biography is given on the website of Harvard University. In February he had travelled to Australia to negotiate terms with the Australian Soccer Football Association, which accepted the tour on the attractive premise that all expenses of the visiting team were to be paid by Chinese promoters.

The team left Hong Kong on 23rd April aboard the Aki Maru and arrived in Sydney on 13th May. Practice sessions were held during stopovers at Manila, Thursday Island, and Brisbane. They spent the following three months touring the country, playing against representative teams of local associations. They also faced the Australian national team in three "Test matches", none of which are recognised as full internationals by the present-day incarnation of the Australian governing body, though it is somewhat ambiguous whether they were recognised as such at the time.

It had been planned to continue the tour into September but it ended abruptly on 6th August following the match at Weston, when several (not all) of the players went on strike. Four of the best players (Lai Yuk-Tat, Wong Shui-Wah, Tso Kwai-Shing, and Chan Kwong-Yiu) had been recalled to Hong Kong aboard the Tango Maru a few days earlier in order to join the Southern China selection which was to represent China in the 1927 Far Eastern Games at Shanghai. This left only 11 players in Australia to fulfil the remaining fixtures, leading to strained relations among the group. The striking players refused to continue the tour, demanding what was termed as "a month's indemnity" amounting to £9 per player. The A.S.F.A. acceded to this demand but was then faced with a further demand by seven of the players, headed by the assistant manager Mr Woo, for "two months indemnity". The tour was abandoned and several fixtures scheduled in Queensland were cancelled, causing financial loss to the local association.

The tour had not been successful from a monetary point of view, with the visitors being the only losers as the local associations were in the splendid position of taking 10% of the gate receipts but having no expenses except for local advertising. A Chinese syndicate had been formed to bring the team to Australia, paying for all expenses including transport and accommodation etc. It was in Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia that the financial losses were made, whereas the matches in New South Wales and Queensland returned reasonable profit. Overall, the Chinese promoters sustained losses of over £2000.

The tour party departed from Sydney on 13th August aboard the St Albans. En route home, the team came ashore when their ship called at Townsville and Cairns and they played against local representative selections; these two games were not considered part of the official tour itinerary. They also played two games at Sandakan (British North Borneo) before arriving at Hong Kong on 6th September. There, the Shanghai players remained for some days, playing exhibition and fund-raising matches as guest players for local clubs, before returning home. The following season, the Loh Hwa Athletic Club (captained by Lee Wai-Tong) became the first Chinese team to win the Shanghai league championship, while the Chinese Athletic Association won the Hong Kong league title for the first time.

A Chinese source lists an additional match on 8-8-1927 (as a 4-0 win for China) but no evidence of this has been found in Australian newspapers, which instead reported on the abandonment of the remaining tour matches in Queensland due to the majority of the Chinese players going on strike, as discussed above. The scheduled fixture for 8-8-1927 was to be at Stanthorpe, but the official tour report by the Australian Soccer Football Association mentions explicitly that the Stanthorpe match was cancelled along with all the remaining fixtures. It is possible that some sort of informal match was played instead. Note: This match was arranged ad hoc; the Cairns Association learned only the previous day that the Chinese team's ship would
stop at Cairns by reading a newspaper report of their previous match at Townsville. The Association held a meeting that
evening, and a notice was published in the following day's edition of the 'Cairns Post' summoning local players to attend
Norman Park in case any match could be arranged vs the Chinese. When the ship called into port the Cairns officials quickly
convinced the Chinese to play, and the match kicked off only half an hour after the ship had arrived.

In North Borneo (en route)
The team played two matches at Sandakan, winning both.
