A competition sponsored by an Argentine sports marketing company, and organised in the 2nd half of the calender year in order to provide a finalist for the revived Recopa (against the Copa Libertadores 2002 winners, Olimpia, who were excluded from entering this competition).
It replaced the intended Copa Panamericana, which was moved to 2003; it was later cancelled and replaced by a 2003 edition of the Copa Sudamericana.
Brazilian teams have refused to enter due to fixture congestion
(thanks to the domestic 26-team league).
San Lorenzo enter as last winners of Copa Mercosur, other than
that participation is by invitation (in Chile a Pre-Liguilla is
played).
