Played for a decade between past winners of the Copa Libertadores. The last edition in 1997 also included Vasco da Gama, who were admitted as winners of the 1948 South American Champions Cup, played in Santiago de Chile.
In 1998, the tournament was to be replaced by a cup contested by former winners of the Supercopa, which was eventually scratched.
Eventually, the tournament was replaced by the Copa Mercosur.
