REMARKS OF THE RSSSF PRESIDENT Unlike the two previous years, in which Marco van Basten and Roberto Baggio won landslide victories, this year a close battle for first place was fought between the two World Cup stars, Romário and Hristo Stoitchkov, which the first only narrowly won. In fact, it wasn't until the very end of the vote that he obtained the lead. Whereas the first two places for those players do not come as a surprise, the RSS voters once more proved their objectiveness and expert judgement by choosing a defender, Paolo Maldini, ahead of the more flashy characters of Gheorghe Hagi and Roberto Baggio. Maldini was instrumental in taking Milan to a third consecutive scudetto and their fifth Champions Cup. He certainly deserved a medal spot, just as Hagi and Baggio could not be overlooked in the top-5 thanks to their World Cup performances. The rest of the top-15 once again reads as a "Who is Who" in international football for 1994. Cheers, Karel Stokkermans
