From: Riffster (nerazzurri@nowayJOSEattbi.com) Subject: Italian Teams Dominate Again Date: 2002-03-21 18:25:17 PST Well, this is a sad state when every time you turn around an Italian side is winning in Europe. A Juventus B side eliminates a pompous Arsenal, even when a man down. Milan sends upstart Hapoel packing back to Tel Aviv and Inter blanks Valencia in the Mestella. What can one say when so much pasta and wine is flowing, and when the EPL, Bundesliga, and mighty La Liga manage a grand total of one semifinalist between them in the UEFA Cup while Serie A boasts a brace of teams. And this in the UEFA Cup - the toughest Cup from start to finish. What can one say? Possibly some sort of player exchange could be initiated to help pump up the weak-sister leagues in Europe (Bundesliga, Liga, and EPL prime amongst them...) Maybe those countries should re-examine their system of soccer and the over-indulgence in feckless rushes upfield punctuated with needless and superfluous juggling and non- existent defense? Regardless of the theories one might apply to improve the woeful condition of Spanish, English and German soccer, one may simply have to admit to the inevi- table - Italy is stomping the yarbles out of the rest of Europe. Sad - just plain sad. One has to weep at the thought of the innocents that will wander forth from those diluted leagues into the World Cup. Maybe the Italians should be penalized a man down right away at the start of each game. That might make the World Cup somewhat close. But probably not. After all, the Italians have Toldo. - Riff "Old Man and the RSS" Ster =============================================================== From: Thach H Nguyen (esse@nullify2mail.inkslab.com) Subject: Re: Italian Teams Dominate Again Date: 2002-03-21 19:45:51 PST Just to let you know I've started the counter. =============================================================== From: luke (esundara@ford.com) Subject: Re: Italian Teams Dominate Again Date: 2002-03-21 20:00:18 PST The Champions League (OR European Cup) is the elite competition in Europe. The UEFA cup is for the poor relatives or first round losers of the Champions league to drop into. How many Italian teams are there in the quarter finals of the Champions League? Yes thats right.
