All statistics of British football in the 19th century are based on publications in newspapers
of the time. Reports of many matches were limited only to the results. Often newspapers published
team lineups on the eve of a match or in a match report, but did not give the scorers.
Another feature of that time: newspapers often gave their own version of goalscorers in the game.
It is therefore difficult or impossible to determine the top scorer in some seasons in all British
leagues.
The situation with statistics in official matches improved significantly in the 1890s.
In addition, newspapers often reported incorrect information about players when they transferred.
As a result, erroneous information about the careers of a number of players (including some of the
above) appears on the Internet.
The player statistics in the above list are not complete for the reasons stated. However, it is
almost certain that the first and perhaps only player to score more than 300 goals in official
games in the 19th century (at least on a professional level) was the famous Aston Villa captain
John Devey. It is also very likely that Devey was the first to score 200 goals (in 1893).
It is almost impossible to determine the name of the football player who scored 100 goals in
official games first. It is known that in the pre-league era (before 1888), John Brodie, the
Wolverhampton Wanderers player, scored more than 100 goals. Between 1882 and 1888, at least 103
goals were found scored by Brodie for club (92) and regional selections Birmingham and
Staffordshire. Brodie was perhaps the first to score more than 40 goals in official matches in
a single season: 41 goals in 1883-84, incl. 39 in 17 appearances for the club in five different
cup competitions and 2 goals in 4 games for Birmingham selection.

This club played in the Scottish 2nd Eleven Cup in the autumn of 1883. Ross played at least in the 2nd round on 27/10/1883 against Dunblane 2nd (12-1, goalscorers unknown). Ross made his debut for Preston North End on 24 November 1883. For his first two seasons, Ross played only in friendlies. Reason: the club missed the FA Cup 1884-85, the 2nd club played in the Lancashire Cup (lost in 2nd round). Ross's debut in the FA Cup was supposed to take place on October 26, 1885, but his opponent, Great Lever, withdrew from the tournament before the match. The teams played a friendly, which Preston won (3-2) thanks to the two goals from Ross in the last 5 minutes of the match. James Ross is one of the best scorers in the history of the FA Cup and Lancashire Cup in total and in single season: 19 goals in the FA Cup 1887-88 (option - 20 goals) and 15 goals in the Lancashire Cup in 1886-87. According to different versions of scorers in some matches, Ross scored between 44 and 50 goals in the FA Cup. James Ross has never been the top scorer in the English league (1st division). In the 1889-90 season, James's older brother Nick ("Jack") Ross became the top scorer. James Ross was arguably the 2nd Division's top scorer in the 1897-98 season. According to book „The Clarets Chronicles: The Definitive History of Burnley FC“, he scored 23 goals that season. English newspapers reported in May 1898 that Ross became the top scorer of the 2nd division with 26 goals. A check of the club's game statistics from that season's press confirms this fact. Ross scored at least 2 goals that are not in the book. September the 6th against Arsenal (according to the Burnley Express) and November the 13th ag. Luton Town (according to the Luton Reporter). The scorers of 3 goals FC Burnley are unknown. James Ross was the oldest season top scorer (32 years) in the English league (1st and 2nd divisions) before the 1st World War. Ross holds two unique records. He played test games for 5 seasons in a row. Also he won the 2nd division three times with three different teams within 4 seasons! Ross ended the 1901-02 season with the 2nd team of Manchester City. Ross scored his last goal on April the 12th in a Lancashire Combination match against Blackburn Rovers reserve (7-1), two months before his sudden death.

McMahon may be the only player to score 50 goals in National Cup in the 19th century (incl. 12 goals in 8 games for Hibernian). McMahon probably began his career in the 2nd team of Leith Harp in 1886. The regional press published detailed reports quite rarely. In November 1886 he played in the Edinburgh 2nd XI Cup match. In March 1887 McMahon scored at least 2 goals in the 2nd round match of the Edinburgh Consolation Cup against Royal Oak (5-4), but 4 days later he was suspended until the end of the season due to a complaint from the referee. Reason: “a foul charge against the Royal Oak goalkeeper”. Other McMahon - Ross - played center forward rest of season. Ross McMahon also played for Hibernians (1885-86), Erin Rovers Perth, Burnley FC (1888-89) and regional team East of Scotland. Alexander McMahon extended his career in the Edinburgh Harp in the autumn of 1887. In January 1889 he transferred to Hibernians FC for next 2 years. On June 5, 1889 he played again for Leith Harp in the first round of Gibson Charity Cup against Leith Athletic (2-6) and scored one goal.

Harry first played in an official game (Wednesbury Charity Cup) on 19.11.1881 in a match against Spital Chesterfield (10:1). Goal scorers are unknown. If Harry was indeed born in 1868, he was under 13.5 years old on that day! Harry played at least two more cup games in his first two seasons: on 18.02.1882 ag. Walsall Swifts (0:2, Walsall Cup) and on 10.03.1883 ag. Nottingham Forest (0:3, Wednesbury Charity Cup). In the summer of 1883, a new club, Wednesbury Town, was founded on the basis of the 2nd team Wednesbury Old Athletic. The Woods brothers played for this team for the next two years. The first season went quite well for the team. Wednesbury Town won the Wednesbury Charity Cup. Harry scored 4 goals in 6 games. The team reached the fourth round of the FA Cup. In the replay of the 2nd round against Walsall Town on 08.12.1883 (6:0), Harry Wood scored 3 goals (the rest were scored by Woodcock (2) and George Wood). According to his date of birth, Harry played in this match at the age of 15,5 years, making him possibly the youngest hat-trick scorer in the FA Cup history. Harry scored also the only goal in the 3rd round match against Derby Midland on 29.12.1883 (1:0). On 26.12.1883 Harry Wood made his debut for the regional team (District - Birmingham - 1:4). Harry Wood should not have played in this match. But due to the absence of several players, Wood and two other players of Wednesbury Town were urgently called up to take part in the match. „The District played four men short at the commencement of the game, and were one man short throughout the match.“ The second season was less successful for Wednesbury Town and in the spring of 1885 the team was disbanded. The Wood brothers returned to Old Athletic for a short time. In early October 1885, the Wolverhampton press reported new Wolves players, brothers G. and H. Wood from Wednesbury Town. Harry played for Wolverhampton for the next 13 years (with a short spell at Walsall Town). Harry Wood is likely the only player to have played more than 500 official matches in the 19th century. He was the first in the history of football to play 600 and 700 official games. Harry Wood probably holds the record for the most national cup games in the 19th century: 65 matches between 1883 and 1900. „Harry Wood is perhaps one of the finest inside left forwards in England“ (Lancashire Evening Post, 25 March 1893).

Southern Counties - 7:1, goal scorers unknown) at the age of 17. In April 1886 he was named as a candidate for the Scottish national team. McPherson played for national and league selects for 14 years (one of the longest period in those years), until his final season. In total he played 12 Scottish International trial matches, perhaps more than anyone else in 19th century. According to information published in some sources, John McPherson played in the 1887-88 season simultaneously for three clubs (Everton, Kilmarnock and Cowlairs). This information is incorrect. John's older brother James McPherson played for the Cowlars. John became a Cowlairs player in April 1888. For Everton played (according to the club archives) one Rob McPherson. John McPherson is one of the most successful Scottish players in the 19th century.

In the spring of 1885, Southworth retrained as a goalkeeper for 2 years. In the autumn of 1885, Southworth joined the Chester FC as an amateur. He cited better opportunities for his musical career as the reason for moving to Chester. Southworth and his brothers were professional musicians. Because Southworth had a professional contract with Blackburn Olympic, he was suspended for 12 months and only played friendlies for Chester. In the spring of 1887, Southworth returned to Blackburn as a striker. Southworth was the first in football history to score 100 goals in the top league and 200 goals at the top level. The Lancashire Cup was the most representative regional cup. In the early seasons of the English league, every second team was from Lancashire. The East Lancashire Charity Cup was a tournament of the top four teams in the region: Blackburn Rovers, Accrington, Darwen and Burnley. All played in the early 1890s in the English league. In the 1880s, Blackburn Olympic, winners of the FA Cup 1883, also played in the tournament. Southworth apparently holds the 19th century scoring record in single season at top level. In 1890-91 he scored 47 goals in 32 official games, including 4 goals in two canceled games. Both matches - December 27th against Accrington (2-1, one goal of Southworth) and January 10th against West Bromvich (4-0, 3 goals) - were initially included in the league table, but were later replayed. Southworth's transfer to Everton in the summer of 1893 caused such a stir that he was forced to publish an open letter to the press explaining the reasons for the transfer. The reason was the same as 8 years earlier - better opportunities for musical activity after the end of a football career. In a benefit match on November the 19th, 1894 Preston North End v. Everton, Southworth badly injured his knee and effectively ended his career. Many journalists and players, even several years later, called Southworth the best center forward in the world. John Southworth's musical career as a member of various orchestras lasted more than half a century.
