Germany - Regional Analysis


Below you find a regionwise analysis of the German league - which regions provided how many teams to the league, and titles won per region.


Information is prepared as follows:

- name of the region (Länder) in German and, if different, in English

- population (as of Jan 1, 2008, rounded to thousands)

- German championships won by teams of the region from 1903 to 1963.  Note that the
  championship was not awarded in 1904 and 1922, and was not played from 1914-15 to
  1918-19 and from 1944-45 to 1946-47 because of World Wars.

- DDR-Oberliga champions from 1949 to 1990-91.  Played by teams of the former (East) 
  German Democratic Republic.  So, only the Länder: Berlin, Brandenburg, 
  Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt and Thüringen.

- Bundesliga: in the first column, seasons played by each club in Bundesliga from 
  1963-64 to 2009-10. 

In brackets, Bundesliga championships won by each club from 1963-64 to 2008-2009.
