Josef "Sepp" Herberger - Goals in International Matches.

NB: there is some controversy as to when Herberger officially or factually took over as head coach from Otto Nerz. The DFB originally considered this to have happened after the shock exit against Norway at the Berlin Olympics, making the match on 13- 9-36 against Poland (at which Nerz was not present) his first. However, Nerz remained "available" for the DFB and travelled with the team for most matches since then, e.g. on 27- 9-36 in Prague (when Herberger was with the effective B-side in Krefeld), and did not withdraw officially until 12- 5-38, two days for the match against England. Of the first 21 matches below, Herberger appears to have been the "man in charge" for only three, those numbered 1, 3 and 9 (at match number 20, Emil Melcher sat on the bench). In 2019, following a study by H. Kümper the DFB decided to attribute the first five matches below to Nerz (although he was not even in the stadium at matches 1 and 3) and start Herberger's tenure with match 6 below.
