was played by Singapore's M-Cup team, which included the South Korean defender Jang Jung - despite this the game is still considered a full international by FIFA and by New Zealand. Note: Fandi also played three games (scoring one goal) for Singapore vs Brunei in the Malaysia Cup between 1979 and 1981 (see below), which could arguably be considered as full internationals.
The list above has been compiled personally by the author, using only the 'common sense' criterion that both teams involved were full national teams with no effective restrictions imposed on player selection (allowing for unavailability of players due to injuries, suspensions, retirements etc), with the exception of game 79 above.
In 1998 the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) wrote to its member associations asking them to submit a list of any players who had won at least 100 caps, for the AFC "Century Club". The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) did not submit any names, as it did not believe that any player had reached 100 caps, although no formal checks were made. When the AFC announced the Century Club list publically in February 1999, there was an outcry among the Singapore football fraternity that no Singaporean had been nominated (whereas by comparison there were eight Malaysians on the list). Fandi himself said publically that he was sure he had played over 100 international games, and that he was not the only centurion.
An unofficial study was made by Singaporean fan Felix Chin, using newspaper archives at the National Library. He found that four players should have been included: Malek Awab (122), Samad Alapitchay (105), David Lee (103), and Fandi Ahmad (101). Mr Chin submitted his findings to the FAS in April 1999. The FAS agreed to submit the four names to the AFC for belated inclusion in its Century Club, and in May 2001 the four players were inducted into the club at the 'AFC Player of the Year 2000' awards ceremony.
In January 2006, on the occasion of Aide Iskandar's 100th cap, an article in the 'Straits Times' mentioned slightly different figures for the established centurions: Malek Awab (118), David Lee (105), Nazri Nasir (103), Samad Alapitchay (102), Fandi Ahmad (100).
In March 2007, the FAS announced the induction of Aide Iskandar and S.Subramani into FIFA's Century Club (which is administered separately from the AFC version). However, when the FAS was informed by FIFA that these two players were the first Singaporean centurions to be recognized, they sought clarification on why the other five centurions had not been included by FIFA, given that they were already members of the AFC club. In June 2007 FIFA responded that the players concerned had not appeared in 100 'eligible' matches, citing (for example) Olympic matches and friendlies with non-neutral referees as ineligible.
The FIFA ruling on Olympic matches (announced in 1999) is widely regarded as heavy-handed in the sense that it discounts all matches indiscriminately, regardless of whether the teams involved were full national teams. The ruling is ignored by many European associations in their lists of player appearances. For the Olympic matches listed above (games 7-12 and 48-50) both Singapore and the opposition countries were unaffected by any restrictions, and thus fielded their full national teams. The second example is tenuous, as the FIFA statutes clearly state that the referee of an international match need not necessarily have neutral nationality if the associations agree in advance. Furthermore, such a rule does not seem to have been applied consistently by FIFA, based on the appearance totals of several other players in its Century Club (which is rather incomplete and often inaccurate). In general, FIFA does not always apply the level of rigourous checking that one would naturally expect when it comes to classifying international matches (see, for example, the note about game 79 above), so it seems churlish of them to do so only after a player has reached a landmark achievement.
At the time of writing (May 2013), the Singaporeans listed in FIFA's Century Club are as follows: Daniel Bennett (128), Aide Iskandar (121), S.Subramani (115), Shahril bin Ishak (110), Indra Sahdan Daud (108), and Nazri Nasir (100). Malek Awab, David Lee, Samad Alapitchay, and Fandi Ahmad are not included.
The question of whether or not a player has made 100 international appearances depends entirely on the criteria for a match to be considered a "full international". Recognition of a match by one or both countries' associations and/or FIFA is often considered definitive, but there is no consistent universal definition in use. Indeed many associations have not maintained sufficiently detailed records on the matter. FIFA's statutes define certain conditions required for a match to be recognized (for example, the submission of financial levies and referee's report), but these are often not fully satisfied and the precise conditions have undergone considerable variation over the years. FIFA's list of international matches includes many matches which do not meet its own criteria, or those of any conceivable definition (a notable example is the inclusion of Great Britain Olympic matches up to 1948), and omits matches that do meet its own criteria and indeed have been acknowledged previously as full internationals (for example, in its own monthly 'FIFA News' publication).
