It was the largest sports arena in Romania. Until 1989 it was called "23 August" (the national anniversary during the communist era), but then was renamed "National". (The stadium was occasionally, but erroneously, referred to as "Lia Manoliu"; the sports complex of which the stadium is a part was indeed renamed thus in honour of the Romanian discus thrower who competed at six different Summer Olympics (the first track and field athlete to ever do so) and won gold at the Games in 1968, but the stadium itself never was renamed after her.)
The European championship qualifier against Albania on November 21, 2007, was the last match played there, as the stadium is demolished so that a more modern and even larger stadium can be built at the same spot.
