Eerste Divisie 1997/98
The start of the season was fairly indifferent, with good away wins at
strong teams like Heracles and Den Haag but too many draws at home.
In spite of earning praise for their play, Den Bosch couldn't find the
net often enough, and decided to get the Wizard of Tatabánya, József
Kiprich, back from Cyprus to the Netherlands. The immediate effect
was a serious challenge for the 2nd period title, but that went
horrendously wrong in the last match in that period, a 4-0 home defeat
against Cambuur. After that desaster, spirit seems to have left
the team. The first match after the winter break saw an encouraging
draw with runaway leaders AZ in a thriller in which Den Bosch had to
come from behind three times. In the third period, dreadful results
kept following great ones, but in the fourth and final period, Den
Bosch showed great form, beating provincial rivals Eindhoven and TOP
away and finally winning the period with 7 wins out of 8 matches and
a goal difference of 20-3; hopefully this type of form can be continued
in the promotion playoffs. Drawing the last match at home to Helmond
meant Den Bosch were included in the "northern" group rather than a
financially more attractive (and probably) weaker group with Eindhoven,
RKC and Den Haag. In the group itself, too many missed chances in the
first two home matches meant Den Bosch never really were in the running
for promotion in spite of convincingly trashing Groningen in the first
away match. The last match, at home to Groningen, saw the end of the
careers of Erwin Koeman and József Kiprich.
