Hoofdklasse B 1955/56
The second season of professional football was dedicated to forming
a national first division for the first time in history. The top-9
from both "hoofdklasses" qualified for this new "eredivisie", and
B.V.V. managed to get in, again finishing sixth, two points clear of
tenth place, thanks to a 5-1 away win at S.H.S. in the last round.
In the end a draw at lowly S.H.S. would have been sufficient as well.
However, before the match, three B.V.V. fans with more money than
brains didn't have the faith and tried to bribe S.H.S. 'keeper Wim
Landman, then one of the best goalies in the country. After the
match, Landman, who had already puzzled spectators with his play
in Holland Sports last home match of the 1954/55 season (1-3 to
N.A.C., then in dire need of points) returned the advance given to
him.
The issue might have ended there but for the discovery of a black
money circuit at B.V.V. months later; documents concerning the
Landman affair were found, Landman was suspended, and never
returned to his old form. He committed suicide some twenty years
later (1975), while B.V.V.'s stay in the eredivisie was a short
and unhappy affair.
